A prominent, 150-year old insurance company had expanded their technology infrastructure over time to nine EMC Centera clusters in two data centers. The environment had become extremely challenging to manage and, the company made a strategic decision to consolidate and simplify the Centera clusters; improve the manageability of their archiving environment; and reduce operational and administrative costs.

The firm relied on Datagr8’s expertise to implement their strategy while keeping their business operating seamlessly. The goal was to consolidate seven production Centera clusters into two, and refresh two other large production Centera clusters to reduce their data center footprint.

Developing the Project Plan

Planning the project required an extensive review of the customer’s complete archiving environment. The Datagr8 team deployed DobiMiner to audit the data and synchronize the existing Source and DR-Target information. Next, in collaboration with the firm’s IT staff and application representatives at the customer, Datagr8 deployed two DobiMiner instances and finalized the migration plan.

The firm was impressed with the proposed migration timeline and the thoroughness of the project plan. The project progressed smoothly; however, during its execution it became necessary to add a third data center to the plan. Working together, the two teams worked through the necessary changes to the project to accommodate the new requirement.

Executing the Migration

The Datagr8 team used DobiMiner to migrate the Centera data to the new consolidated arrays.

For the consolidation component of the project, Datagr8 completed the migration in less than 40 days for each Centera (production and DR), and scheduled the switchover in three windows to accommodate the different application teams. They performed the actual switchover and comprehensive testing in less than a business day.

For the refresh and relocation, Datagr8 again completed the migration in less than 40 days for each Centera (production and DR), and scheduled the switchover in two windows to accommodate the different application teams. And they again performed the actual switchover and thorough testing in less than a business day.

During the migration process, a missed application triggered a restart at one point. Once DobiMiner addressed the issue, it kicked off another synchronization and monitored the activity until the application team was ready to perform the switchover. There was no impact on any of the applications already switched over, including the ones using the same pools.

Overall, the migration showcased the flexibility of DobiMiner, with pool-by-pool migrations and switchovers, enabling applications to move to the new Centera clusters when the application teams were ready without impacting other business teams. The project also showed how DobiMiner streamlines migrations despite having to deal with new source and new target Centeras being available at different times. DobiMiner started the migrations independently on the completed configurations, and automatically iterated over new ingest until the remaining Center clusters were ready to receive the data.

Meeting the Customer’s Goals

Datagr8 implemented the agreed upon migration project plan and schedule, and helped the company meet their stated goals for data center consolidation, improved manageability, and reduced operational and administrative costs. The Datagr8 team spearheaded the migration of over 500 TB of data and 1.8 billion objects in approximately 100 days.

The customer’s business teams had complete confidence in the integrity of the migrated applications and were pleased with the seamlessness of the overall migration project. They were also impressed with the tremendous detail provided by the DobiMiner software, particularly when gathering c-clips information and data trends.
